As I took the dogs out this morning, a beautiful robin was singing in my garden. Even though the trees sre bare of leaves, it took me a few minutes scanning the tree to find them, but I did.
I decided to grab my phone and take a video, to enjoy it now and later. But as I did, I noticed the other noises on the periphery of my hearing.
Contractors working on a nearby house, swearing about something. A washing machine as it went into a loud spin cycle.
I thought about cancelling the video, and then decided "I’m not going to let the other noises affect what I do"...
I sent the video to my best friend, because when I hear birdsong, I always think of her - the amount of times I’ve been voice chatting to her, and her saying how she loves hearing the birds in the background. And sure enough, I got a message back saying she’d loved it.
I hadn’t thought about posting on social media, but then realised I was letting the interruptions win.
Which is a very good allegory for life in general. There’s always going to be background noise pulling at your focus. Interruptions to what you want to do. But you choose what you let in.
Do you let those interruptions affect you?
Or do you choose to only listen to the beautiful robin's song?
My life is infintitely better when I choose to listen to what I want to. What I need. And to tune out the negativity, the distraction.
Yes, there are times we should pay attention, and we should be uncomfortable with what is going on in the world around us, rather than using this as an excuse to drown them out. We should use these as catalysts for action. But the cussing of a contractor, the machines we can hear when we're in nature? Those we can ignore.
We have to know when to say "I will let this in" or "I choose not to let this in", for our own good...
So what do you choose to absorb today?
Me, I chose to use the robin's song as inspiration for a tarot spread and draw.
